Heavyweights collide when Irish visit Michigan

By BRIAN OREFICE
.c The Associated Press

Notre Dame comes off a season-opening win and a two-spot climb up the rankings. If the Irish want to continue those trends this weekend, they'd be wise to keep this in mind: they're not playing Kansas anymore.

The 16th-ranked Irish travel to the Big House on Saturday to take on No. 7 Michigan in a matchup with early national championship ramifications between the two winningest programs in college football.

Saturday's game will be the first of the season for the Wolverines, whose 786 all-time wins are the most of any school. Notre Dame has 762 victories, but owns the sport's highest winning percentage, .757 to Michigan's .745.

The Irish defeated Kansas 48-13 at home last Saturday, but the win hardly proved to be as impressive as the final score might indicate. Notre Dame saw a 20-0 advantage cut to 20-13 before a blocked field goal sparked the team to a strong second half.

``I don't think we'll be able to win anywhere else like that,'' said Jarious Jackson, who lived up to his reputation as a run-first, pass-second quarterback. The senior threw three interceptions in the win and gained 85 yards on the ground - just four less than he passed for.

``We definitely can't go into Ann Arbor playing like this,'' he said.

Despite their uneven performance, the Irish can take solace in a strong ground attack that saw them rush for 363 yards, 150 more than last year's average. Tony Fisher stepped in for the graduated Autry Denson and had 111 yards on 13 carries.

``We all realize the stakes will go up next week playing on the road,'' coach Bob Davie said. ``Our football team realizes it doesn't matter where we are now. It matters where we are next week.''

Michigan will be trying to avoid the pitfall encountered by fellow Top 10 powers Arizona and Ohio State a week ago: dropping out of the national title race after just one week because of a loss to a ranked opening-game opponent.

But the Wolverines will have a bit of history - not to mention 110,000-plus fans - on their side. Michigan is 82-13-2 in home openers and is the only school to have a winning record (16-11-1) against the Irish with a minimum of five meetings. Notre Dame, however, is 5-4 at Michigan Stadium.

Coach Lloyd Carr will likely look to take advantage of his talented and experienced offensive line and pound tailback Anthony Thomas against the Irish defense.

Quarterback Tom Brady, who will tie the school record of 13 consecutive games with a touchdown pass if he can throw one Saturday, completed over 60 percent of his passes last season and threw for over 2,600 yards. As consistent as the fifth-year senior is, he's being pushed by sophomore phenom Drew Henson.

Brady completed 23 of 36 passes for 267 yards in last season's game, but Notre Dame scored 31 unanswered points to start the second half in a 36-20 rout at Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 5.
